SESSION 2: ONBOARD CARBON CAPTURE: PROGRESS, CHALLENGES AND STANDARDISATION
This session will explore critical topics such as system integration, regulatory uncertainties, and infrastructure gaps for CO2 offloading, alongside the progress made in standardising performance metrics and addressing safety concerns. Attendees will gain insights into vessel stability, corrosion issues, and the economic feasibility of various capture rates, which are essential for understanding the practical implementation of OCCS.

Onboarding onboard carbon capture systems
Onboard carbon capture systems (OCCS) have garnered significant interest in recent years, with considerable efforts being made to explore their potential to reduce emissions from the global shipping fleet. The regulatory status and incentives for applying OCCS on ships are crucial factors in its adoption, as is the development of offloading hubs. While OCCS will incur costs, so will low-carbon fuels. The 2024 DNV Maritime Forecast investigates the future fuel mix and the uptake of OCCS up to 2050 using a scenario-based framework.

SESSION 2.1: DEVELOPMENT OF A GAME-CHANGING SIMPLIFIED CO2 LIQUEFACTION PROCESS
Time | Session / Paper | Presenters/Authors |
17:00 | This session will present the innovative liquefaction process jointly developed by JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Corporation, NYK Line and Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers AS to tackle one of the challenges the CCS industry faces in the liquefaction process. Liquefaction of CO2 is essential for transporting CO2 on vessels but involves significant investments, energy consumption and land space requirements at most emitters and terminals. Attendees will gain insights from the study and demonstration findings of the simplified and optimised liquefaction and storage process, which may be a game-changing option for many emitters.

SESSION 3: UNLOCKING CO2 SHIPPING AND STORAGE POTENTIAL IN THE US AND BEYOND
This session will focus on the transformative potential of CO2 shipping and storage in the United States, particularly through the Clean Hydrogen Works project, which aims to provide a significant source of captured CO2. Attendees will explore the project’s collaboration with major shipping companies to develop efficient transport solutions for clean hydrogen-ammonia, alongside the necessary infrastructure for CO2 capture, transport, and storage. Key discussion points will include the projected volumes of clean hydrogen-ammonia and CO2, the types of vessels required, and the regulatory and financial frameworks essential for the project’s success.
