Experienced Greek shipping executive George Vakirtzis is embarking on a new chapter in his maritime career after four decades of service at the traditional tanker and bulk carrier company, Polembros Shipping
In a recent social media announcement, Mr Vakirtzis revealed he will assume the role of chief executive at the growing dry bulk specialist Minoa Marine, effective 2 May. "I am eager to embark on this journey and committed to leading Minoa into a successful future," he stated.
Minoa Marine, established in 2015, is a relatively new entrant to the Greek shipping community. The company currently manages a fleet of 13 Panamax and Kamsarmax bulk carriers – all built in Japanese shipyards – with an average vessel age of approximately 20 years. The most recent and youngest addition to the fleet is Ascanio, built in 2009.
According to its official website, Minoa Marine has ambitions to expand gradually and manage a mixed fleet comprising both bulk carriers and tankers.
A 40-year chapter closes
Mr Vakirtzis brings deep expertise in managing fleets across both key shipping sectors. At the time of his departure from Polembros at the end of last year, the company operated a robust fleet of 14 tankers and 13 bulk carriers.
He served the traditional Greek owner for nearly 40 years, the last 10 of which he spent as chief executive, before stepping down as the next generation of the Polemis family assumed leadership.
Among the recent milestones during his tenure was the strategic order of three Suezmax tankers from China’s New Times Shipbuilding in 2023, with two delivered this year and the third expected by September.
One of the more challenging moments during Mr Vakirtzis’s tenure came in May 2022, when Polembros’ tanker Prudent Warrior was seized by Iranian armed forces. The vessel was held for about six months before being released.
