Korean Register of Shipping (KR) chief surveyor Hyung-min Cho was elected chairman of the Hull Panel at the 85th International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Board of Directors, held in London 30 June
The election was held by secret ballot by 11 IACS members. Mr Hyung-Min has extensive experience and expertise in the hull structure field, and has contributed to common structural rules (CSR) projects. He joined KR in 2005 and has been active in various project teams under the IACS Hull Panel.
The Hull Panel is one of IACS core technical working groups and oversees the development of rules, regulations and guidance related to hull structure including CSR and goal-based ship construction standards for bulk carriers and oil tankers.
Mr Hyung-Min was elected chairman of the IACS Hull Panel in recognition of his technical contributions to these rules. He is also a technical advisor to the International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress, and a technical advisor to the Republic of Korea delegation of the goal-based standards working group of IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Hyung-Min said, “I am honoured and proud to be the first KR representative to be elected to this important IACS position. It underlines our technical skills in hull structural issues and I look forward to contributing to improvements in this field. This is an area in which other classification societies have led, and it demonstrates the progress KR has made.”
His three-year term will stretch from January 2023 to December 2025.
KR said his appointment as chairman is significant and shows the growing recognition of the classification society’s technological prowess in the field of hull structure, which is at the core of shipbuilding, adding, “Until now, the IACS Hull Panel chairperson position has been mainly occupied by classification societies in Europe and the United States, which have been recognised for their technological prowess in the hull structure field.”
KR has successfully held four chairperson positions in three expert committees, Survey Panel, Machinery Panel, Environmental Panel.
