Japanese fleetowner says move is designed to build relationships with stakeholders and "provide stable services to customers"
MOL says it will open a new office in Washington, DC in the US, through its US subsidiary MOL Americas.
The world’s second-largest shipowner said the move came about due to increasing complexity in trade and regulation and uncertainty in geopolitics.
"As global issues such as increasing geopolitical risks, strengthening environmental regulations, and increasingly complex supply chains become apparent, collaboration with governments and international organisations has become more important than ever," the company said.
Since US President Donald Trump took office in January 2025, the US has engaged in rapid and aggressive trade policy shifts with its global trading partners including tariffs, port fees and an escalating trade war with China.
MOL said its new office would seek to shore up US relations and provide stability to its global customer base.
"By establishing a base in Washington DC, the centre of global policymaking where federal government agencies, congress, regulatory authorities, industry associations, and international organisations and embassies that serve as a forum for multilateral discussions are concentrated, MOL will be able to build relationships with various stakeholders and provide stable services to customers not only in the United States but also on a global scale through information exchange and recommendations," the company said.
