One of the largest owners of tugboats in northern Europe has invested in a new headquarters and tugs
Multraship Towage & Salvage has expanded its operations following growing demand for its coastal, offshore and harbour tugs to assist large ships, support windfarm projects and emergency response.
The Dutch tug owner has expanded its fleet with new vessels and opened a head office and simulator training centre at the Middenhavendam, near Terneuzen in the Netherlands.
During the opening event on 15 May 2025, Multraship managing director Leendert Muller highlighted the developments making the company a key tug owner in northern Europe.
He mentioned the opportunities from the recent opening of a new lock in the port of Terneuzen, offshore construction projects and rising demand for emergency towing vessels.
“This is a pivotal step forward for us. In terms of operational efficiency and teamwork, the link to the new lock provides an opportunity to maintain our current growth, supporting both our local and international operations,” said Mr Muller.
“That growth is partly the result of our increasing involvement in support work for major projects in offshore windfarm construction and infrastructure,” he continued.
“Examples include the construction of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel between Germany and Denmark, the Princess Elisabeth Energy Island offshore Belgium and the Oosterweel Tunnel near Antwerp.”
During recent years, the number of emergency response towing vessels deployed by Multraship on behalf of the Netherlands Coast Guard has increased to three.
“There is an upward trend in towing and salvage activities,” said Mr Muller. “Combined with other maritime services, we are now active in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.”
Its new headquarters is on a 6,800-m2 site with two floors, built on energy-neutral lines with an advanced air-conditioning system. It is located alongside the Scheldt River and houses offices, a warehouse, the 24/7 dispatch centre and a simulator training centre, and has direct access to a private wharf, working area, and berths for the family company’s fleet.
Multraship also has a location in Terneuzen on the Goessekade, with berths, a warehouse, offices and waiting locations for affiliated companies such as the Verenigde Bootlieden and Montis Mooring.
In November 2024, Multraship welcomed Multratug 36 following its construction by Damen Shipyards to an ASD Tug 3212 design in Vietnam. It was the latest delivery of three tugs Multraship ordered with Damen in June 2023 to meet the growing demand in north Europe from harbour and offshore operations, and marine construction.
That ceremony coincided with Multraship’s 40th anniversary, as the owner was established by the Muller family in 1984 to provide specialist towage and salvage services.
