Panama Canal Authority names Ilya Espino de Marotta administrator through 2033

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has appointed engineer Ilya Espino de Marotta as administrator of the Panama Canal for an eight-year term that runs from 2026-2033.

Ms Marotta is a marine engineer and a long-time professional at the Panama Canal with more than 40 years of experience in technical, operational, and leadership roles. She has previously served as deputy administrator and sustainability officer at the ACP. In those roles, Ms Marotta has led high-impact strategic projects, including the Canal expansion program, as well as key initiatives in water management, sustainability, and modernisation.

The ACP said Ms Marotta is "distinguished by her ability to manage complex projects and represent the institution internationally". 

In her remarks, Ms Marotta said “I am committed to continuing to do my best for our country, supporting our clients and ensuring the strategic planning we have so that Panama continues to grow. I extend my deepest gratitude to my family for these 40 years of service, and I will continue to offer all that I am to the Panama Canal workforce.”

Ms Marotta is a graduate of Texas A&M University in the United States and holds a master’s degree in Economic Engineering from Santa María La Antigua University and executive training from INCAE and the Kellogg School of Management.

The ACP’s board of directors said the appointment was the result of a national and international search, consultation, and evaluation process.

"Ilya Espino de Marotta has the experience, judgment, and capabilities to lead the Canal in the face of major challenges: water sustainability, the competitiveness of the route, institutional modernisation, operational efficiency, and preserving the Canal’s contribution to national development," the board said.

ACP chairman of the board Jose Ramón Icaza said “The selection of a professional who comes from within the institution’s own ranks reaffirms the strength of its organisational culture, the robustness of its training and succession processes, and the Canal’s capacity to develop leaders prepared to take on the strategic challenges of the interoceanic waterway and continue contributing to the well-being and development of our country.”

The Board of Directors also recognised the work of the current administrator, Dr Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, who they said "has led the Canal through a period of extraordinary challenges: a water crisis, a global pandemic, international logistical disruptions, and geopolitical tensions that altered world trade routes".

The board said the outgoing administration leaves behind a financially robust and competitive canal, fully capable of undertaking the projects outlined in the strategic plan.
