Roger Gray is set to join Ports of Auckland from 4 April 2022 as the group’s new chief executive
His appointment comes as the New Zealand port operator prepares to welcome the first electric-powered tug in the southern hemisphere.
Mr Gray was previously chief executive of Lyttleton Port Co and was a group general manager at Air New Zealand.
Prior to that, he held several senior leadership roles in large businesses involved in supply chains and logistics.
Mr Gray will take over from interim chief executive Wayne Thompson in April.
Ports of Auckland has a strategy to reduce carbon emissions and aims to become carbon neutral in its operations.
As part of this, it will be operating Sparky electric-powered tug, which has been built by Damen Shipyards in Vietnam.
This tug has undergone weeks of tests of its energy storage systems and back-up generators, has been conducting sea trials and testing battery recharging systems, according to the latest Damen social media post.
Auckland will also be the base for a new all-electric ferry in the future. Incat Crowther is designing an electric ferry for Fullers360 of Auckland.
