New SGMF technical committee chair brings eight years’ committee experience and methanol bunkering guidance work to a role that includes executive committee membership
The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) has appointed Andrew Stafford as chairman of its technical committee for a three-year term commencing in the final quarter of 2025, a role that also carries membership of the executive committee and involvement in strategic direction and industry guidance.
The appointment was announced in Dubai on 10 December 2025 in a statement from Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure (TMI), which reported that Mr Stafford had contributed to the technical committee for eight years and had been selected following an open nomination process.
The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel brings together shipowners, fuel suppliers, port operators, equipment manufacturers and classification societies “to establish unified safety guidance and operational best practices” for gaseous and low-carbon fuel solutions.
SGMF senior technical advisor Stephen Gallagher said, “We are delighted to welcome Andrew as chairman of the Technical Committee. His contribution to SGMF, from leading working groups to openly sharing knowledge that informs our guidance, reflects his commitment to safe and sustainable fuel adoption across the maritime sector.”
Mr Stafford has led the Methanol Bunkering Guidelines Working Group and in 2024 worked with representatives from 18 organisations to publish what it described as the first comprehensive global safety guidelines for methanol bunkering operations.
These guidelines were presented as providing a framework for the safe handling and transfer of methanol as a marine fuel, including operational considerations and consistent safety standards.
Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure business unit president Richard Hepworth said, “Andrew’s appointment as chairman of the SGMF Technical Committee is a testament to his expertise and leadership in the field. It also reflects Trelleborg’s commitment to supporting the maritime industry’s transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions
TMI plans to host a Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel technical committee meeting and members’ forum in Dubai in 2026.
