Mubarak Marine commercial and sales manager for ship management, Zia Ansari, will be presenting salvage case studies in the Middle East Gulf during International Tug & Salvage (ITS) Convention, Exhibition & Awards 2024
He will reflect on managing complex operations, approvals and developments during two major incidents in the region, using presentations and video to help delegates visualise the complexity and risk involved in such operations.
The first case study involves refloating a container ship that grounded on Abu Musa Island. Mr Ansari said this project raised both technical and political challenges given the nature of the vessel’s grounding and the status of the island. A short animated video will be presented to explain the refloating operation.
“The other study will be on a wellhead oil platform jacket in Iran that was struck by a vessel and we were tasked with its removal,” said Mr Ansari.
“This involved the use of a host of subsea equipment such as remotely operated vehicles, specialised subsea cutting tools, saturation and mix-air diving, survey and well remedial work using coiled tubing and other equipment.”
This project involved wreck removal, well decommissioning and plugging, preparing the base frame for new jacket installation, and seabed clearance and surveys.
“The platform had suffered a major collision with a surface vessel and was damaged beyond repair or remedy,” Mr Ansari continued. It had to be demolished and removed to allow a new platform jacket to be installed.
“The most critical part of the job was to kill the oil well to prevent any hydrocarbon leakage, ensuring these wells could be reinstated for future oil production,” said Mr Ansari.
This project also required the involvement of the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Department of the Treasury as the area of operation involved a US-sanctioned country.
His presentation will include how to balance owner interests, insurer needs and coastal state priorities, deploying multiple asset types for optimal response and tackling regulatory variances.
The 27th International Tug & Salvage Convention, Exhibition & Awards will be held in association with Caterpillar in Dubai, UAE, 21-23 May 2024. Use this link for more details of this industry event and the associated social and networking opportunities.
