ITS Convention 2024 sponsor: Rolls-Royce Power Systems

Rolls-Royce Power Systems is a main partner of the International Tug & Salvage (ITS) Convention, Exhibition & Awards 2024 and provides vital propulsion solutions to the tug and towage sector

The power systems business unit of Rolls-Royce, headquartered in Friedrichshafen, Germany, is a builder of four-stroke engines for tugs, offshore support vessels, inland vessels, passenger vessels and commercial ships.

Through engineering, digitalisation and electrification, it strives to develop drive and power generation solutions that are ever cleaner and smarter, to provide answers to the challenges posed by the rapidly growing demands for energy and mobility.

Rolls-Royce’s mtu Series 4000 engines, such as the M65L, greatly help to ensure tugboat availability, manoeuvrability and profitability. They offer high levels of performance for a high bollard pull from tugboat propulsion.

All mtu diesel and gas engines perform at the highest levels of reliability with fast load uptake, even in the most challenging conditions. Their high torque levels make towing vessels exceptionally agile, manoeuvrable and safe, and always ready for action.

ITS asked Rolls-Royce Power Systems its views on the latest trends in tugboat design, propulsion and operations and what it will provide delegates of the ITS Convention 2024 in Dubai, in May.

What were the 2023 highlights for Rolls-Royce in the tug sector?

We received several orders for tugs being built in Turkey, with 13 tugs still in the building process and another 12 tugs yet to be sold directly to owners. In China, a harbour tug was built, with hybrid propulsion and 16V mtu 4000 series M64 gensets for Shanghai Port to start operations in Q2 2024. This is the first tugboat built and operated in China with mtu engines.

In Singapore, Seatrium started operating an LNG-hybrid tug with two 16V mtu 4000 series M55RN engines. 2023 also saw mtu’s market entry in Egypt with engines ordered for nine tugs under construction, each with a pair of 16V mtu 4000 series M65L engines, with the first of these launched. Another highlight was networking and involvement on a technical panel and presentation at Riviera Maritime Media’s TUGTECHNOLOGY ’23 conference in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

What can we expect from Rolls-Royce in 2024 in terms of innovations, customer aftersales service and distribution in the tug sector?

We will provide more updates on the energy transition and solutions supporting our journey to net zero and on our focus on methanol and gas. We are expanding our distributor network in the Middle East and will introduce a variable-speed genset supporting pure electric tugs, with a compact design and a high power-to-weight ratio.

Do you have any exciting announcements, updates, or case studies to share with the tug and salvage community?

Yes, this will be within the technical paper and presentation with Seatrium during the 27th International Tug & Salvage Convention, in Dubai.

What do you see as the major trends or developments shaping the future of the global tug industry?

Full-electric tugs; alternative fuel-driven tugs; tugs with hybrid propulsion; increasing bollard pull; consolidation within the tug market resulting in fewer, but bigger operators.

Why did your company decide to sponsor this international event? What are you hoping to achieve?

ITS 2024 is the ideal platform to meet with customers and business partners as it has very good networking. There will be interesting, insightful and high-quality papers, presentations and panel debates.

How will you engage with attendees during the conference? Are you showcasing any new offerings?

We are sponsoring all of the network coffee breaks, providing a technical paper and presentation and will have an exhibition booth to showcase our gas mtu engine model.
