Group Ocean founder and chairman Gordon Bain received the ITS Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by Sanmar Shipyards, at Riviera’s 27th International Tug & Salvage Convention in Dubai
This prestigious honour was awarded during the tug industry gala dinner on the final day of the ITS Convention in recognition of Mr Bain’s dedication to the maritime sector and invaluable contribution to Canadian towage and shipbuilding.
Mr Bain, who received the award from Sanmar Shipyards chairman Ali Gurun, said he has dedicated his life to improving harbour towage through a career spanning several decades. He contributed to many technological and operational developments in the industry, building a considerable maritime group spanning towage, dredging, diving, shipbuilding and repair.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Mr Bain expressed his gratitude for being recognised by his peers and members of the industry and reiterated the importance of collaboration and continuous innovation in the marine industry.
He also thanked the members of his team for their great contribution to the success of his company.
Mr Bain’s early days in the marine industry were marked by creativity, a commitment to improving towing practices and a little risk-taking at times. His passion for innovation and attention to detail helped set high performance standards in the industry.
He founded Aqua-Marine in 1972 to provide integrated marine services. In 1987, it became Ocean Construction Inc and acquired Quebec Tugs. This company became Ocean Transport Maritime in 1992 and subsequently acquired McAllister Towing’s operations in Montreal and Sorel Tug Boats, and in 1997 the Isle-aux-Coudres shipyard.
Further acquisitions and tug fleet renewal occurred during the 2000 decade and in the following 10 years, Group Ocean introduced international operations in the Caribbean and Mexico. In 2020, the group introduced operations in British Columbia and in 2021, acquired Samson Tugboats.
In 2018, Mr Bain retired from the company’s daily operations, handing over the president and chief executive roles to Jacques Tanguay, while remaining chairman of the board of directors.
Riveria’s ITS Lifetime Achievement Award is reserved for those whose contributions have had a profound impact on the maritime industry.
This award, where recipients are chosen by their peers, recognises not only Mr Bain’s professional achievements, but also his role as a mentor and leader in the maritime community.
As maritime operations become more critical to global trade, leaders like Mr Bain will play a vital role in guiding the towage industry and port operations towards safer and more efficient practices.
