Ports in New South Wales, Australia are collaborating with towage providers and other stakeholders to improve operational safety and sustainability
Port Authority of New South Wales (NSW) is working with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), Svitzer and Engage Marine, among others, to drive innovation, strengthen safety protocols and accelerate the industry’s transition to more sustainable operations.
“Whether it is enhancing vessel scheduling, improving navigational safety or advancing net-zero towage initiatives, we are seeing real progress through collaboration on the water,” said Port Authority of NSW chief operating officer John Finch.
“As stewards of Australia’s maritime gateways, we are focused on driving innovation and sustainability to ensure our ports remain resilient and future ready.”
Port Authority chief executive John McKenna said these ports transport around 203M tonnes of cargo, with a value of around US$127Bn annually, which highlights the importance of ensuring resilient and sustainable operations.
“Working together at the operational level is where the rubber hits the road,” said Mr McKenna. “This is where critical efficiencies and safety improvements make NSW more efficient, more profitable and safer for all our people.”
Port Authority of NSW manages the safe and efficient movement of over 6,000 vessel calls each year across Sydney Harbour, Botany Bay, Port Kembla, Newcastle, Yamba and Eden.
These ports are critical gateways for fuel, containers, bulk commodities and manufactured goods, connecting NSW to global markets.
Svitzer has introduced two efficient TRAnsverse tugs, Svitzer Barrington and Svitzer Nobbys, to the Port of Newcastle to enhance safety and lower fuel consumption from escorting and manoeuvring post-Capesize bulk carriers in the harbour.
These were built by Uzmar Shipyard in Turkey to Robert Allan Ltd’s TRAnsverse 3200 design with 80 tonnes of bollard pull.
Port Authority of NSW along with representatives from AMSA, Golden Ocean Group, BlueScope, Svitzer, Engage Marine, Mission to Seafarers, TT Club and OMC International, met at the Safe and Efficient Port Operations Forum in Sydney, Australia on 12 September 2025, to share industry knowledge, experiences and facilitate a joint approach to managing present and future challenges.
