New trio of ferries slated to save around 33% emissions per passenger mile
Strategic Marine has laid the keels for a series of three new 43-m passenger fast ferries at its Singapore yard for new client Bintan Resort Ferries.
The contract for these newbuild vessels establishes a new shipbuilding relationship for Bintan, a provider of ferry services between Singapore and neighbouring Bintan Island, and aluminium boat builder Strategic Marine.
Bintan Resort Ferries currently operates three ferries, each with a capacity of approximately 300 passengers. WIth a goal to replace and expand its current fleet, the new ferries, fully compliant with IMO High-Speed Craft (HSC) Code requirements, will accommodate up to 293 passengers, including 57 in the operator’s Emerald Class. Emissions and fuel economy were key considerations for the design of the ferries with reductions of approximately 33% per passenger mile expected achieved through a combination of efficient design and propulsion equipment, according to the shipbuilder.
Strategic Marine said in a statement: “With improved design and enhanced comfort, the vessels will allow Bintan Resort Ferries to better serve rising passenger demand while significantly improving the overall travel experience.”
A ceremony, attended by senior executives from both companies, marked the commencement of the vessels’ construction and a key point in the project to renew Bintan Resort Ferries’ fleet for the future, according to Strategic Marine.
“We…are confident that these new ferries will be setting new standards for passenger comfort and connectivity in the region,” company CEO Chan Eng Yew said.
“Today is a significant milestone in BRF’s history. The keel laying, though symbolic, marks the physical commencement of construction for our new ferries; We will not just be building new ferries; we are elevating the travel experience and fostering greater confidence among our passengers,” Bintan Resort Ferries general manager Sebastian Koh said.
