Scenic Group’s first of nine high-end ocean and river cruise ships has made its maiden voyage to Greece and Turkey, marking the start of a rapid fleet expansion for the 40-year-old luxury cruise and travel company
Blending a mix of Scenic Group’s “relaxed luxury” with elegant sophistication and the works of contemporary artists and designers, the 120-m luxury ocean yacht Emerald Kaia set sail in early April on its 11-day maiden voyage from Limassol, Cyprus, to Greece and Turkey.
The luxury superyacht will then spend the summer exploring the coastlines from Italy to Montenegro, Albania, and Croatia, as well as the Greek Islands and the Corinth Canal, before cruising through the Red Sea to reposition to the Seychelles from December 2026 to March 2027.
Built by the group’s Halong Shipyard in Halong Bay, Vietnam, Emerald Kaia is the first of nine high-end ocean and river cruise ships that will join the 40-year-old luxury travel and tour group’s fleet over the next three years.
“Emerald Kaia and the upcoming inaugural sailing of Emerald Astra are “important milestones for Scenic Group as we celebrate 40 years of innovation in travel,” said Glen Moroney, chairman and founder of Scenic Group, parent of Emerald Cruises. “As the only cruise company that designs, builds, and operates our own ships, we continue to set new benchmarks in luxury yacht and river cruising,” he added.
“New benchmarks in luxury yacht and river cruising”
Newbuilding investment plans for three new luxury river cruise ships announced in March will significantly expand the firm’s Scenic and Emerald Cruise brand fleets.
Mr Moroney said the investment in the three new vessels “reflects our confidence in the strong demand for our unique approach to luxury cruising. With Scenic Ikon in build for delivery in 2028 and five Emerald Cruises yachts and river ships already confirmed, this announcement marks the next phase of our strategic fleet growth.”
Under construction for the group’s Scenic Discovery Yachts, Scenic Ikon’s inaugural cruising season will be from April 2028 to March 2029, spanning 110 ports, 21 countries, and 26 new destinations. Including the Mediterranean, Aegean and Egypt, the Cape Verde Islands, Dakar, Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, and the Chilean fjords. Exceptionally outfitted, the ship will have two Airbus H130-T2 helicopters and a custom-built Triton AVA 9 submersible, to explore exotic destinations from the air and underwater.

A natural evolution
Commenting on the addition of Emerald Kaia, Karen Moroney, the company’s director of project design and Mr Moroney’s wife, said, the sleek vessel “is a natural evolution of Emerald Yacht Cruises, embodying our commitment to innovation and exceptional guest experience.” She said it draws inspiration from the company’s award-winning yachts, Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Sakara, continuing the cruise line’s philosophy of contemporary design and relaxed luxury. “Every detail reflects our desire to create a space that feels both sophisticated and effortlessly welcoming,” she told Passenger Ship Technology.
The vessel’s design, build and guest experience were shaped by Ms Moroney and the teams at Scenic Group, Emerald Cruises and MKM Yachts.
“Scenic Group has extensive experience in developing innovative world‑class luxury yachts, and we are uniquely positioned as the only cruise company to design, develop, build, and operate our ships in-house. This vertical integration with our team at MKM Yachts, gives us full oversight and control of every stage of the process, which is critical when bringing a complex vision to life,” she said.
Designed for a comfortable, elegant yacht experience, Emerald Kaia offers large owners’ suites and cabins for 128 guests, purpose-built, with expansive lounges, terraces, and decks. Interconnecting suites provide added flexibility for families and groups, while generously sized staterooms and suites deliver contemporary comfort.
Painted a classic white, the ship’s raked superstructure provides ample space in its bow area for guests to lounge in comfortable outdoor seating around a spa pool on the observation sun deck.
Guests can stay active in the infinity pool, indoor-outdoor gym, or marina platform located aft, where they can enjoy swimming and water sports or relax in loungers.
The luxury yacht’s interior incorporates a palette mixed with soft sandy beiges, seafoam greens, vibrant turquoises, and seashell pinks, accented with warm wood surfaces and bright metal fixtures.
Ms Moroney said Emerald Kaia brings together an exceptional group of design and furnishing partners, “with art throughout the yacht infused with Australian influences that reflect our 40‑year heritage.” The luxury yacht has a curated collection of contemporary art and bespoke interior finishes and furnishings to elevate the aesthetics of the onboard spaces. Contemporary American artist, Tom Dixon, the distinctive colourful zigzag-patterned fabrics of Missoni, and high-end furniture designed by Freifrau, Paola Lenti and Kettal create an elegant décor and contemporary atmosphere inside and out.
“Strong demand for our unique approach to luxury cruising”
“These partners share our passion for craftsmanship, comfort and contemporary elegance, and they are featured across the Emerald Cruises and Scenic fleets, continually elevating the ambience and style of our on-board spaces,” she said.
Ms Moroney highlighted the wellness and culinary offerings on Emerald Kaia: “Guests will immediately notice the sense of spaciousness while still enjoying the intimacy that defines our yacht cruising experience.”
Among its culinary offerings is a new design for signature restaurant La Cucina, offering an open kitchen that brings added energy and connection to the dining experience, alongside the new Night Market Grill – “a dynamic, interactive dining venue”, where up to eight guests can share an intimate private seating experience.
Expanded ocean fleet
Adding Emerald Kaia this year allows Emerald Cruises to expand its luxury yacht fleet to three ships. It joins Emerald Azzurra and Emerald Saka, widening the firm’s itineraries across the Mediterranean, Adriatic, Caribbean and Central America, Seychelles, and Indian Ocean. Emerald Cruises’ luxury yacht fleet will grow to five ships, with the addition of sister vessels, Emerald Raiya in 2027 and Emerald Xara in 2028.
Current expansion plans for river cruising include the additions of Emerald Astra this year, Emerald Lumi, Emerald Nova, and Scenic Aria in 2027, and Scenic Spirit II in 2028. Scenic Ikon, an ocean cruise ship, will be delivered for Scenic Luxury Cruises in 2028.
With a fleet of five luxury yachts now operating across Emerald Cruises and Scenic Discovery Yachts, and three other vessels currently under construction, “each newbuild presents both fresh challenges and valuable learnings,” observed Ms Moroney. “Having these yachts built entirely in-house enables us to balance innovation with operational excellence. Continuously refining what we’ve learnt from earlier ships with an unwavering focus on design integrity and the guest experience.”
