Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis says his government hopes to have 2 GW of offshore wind capacity installed in its waters by 2030
The Prime Minister made the remark in a speech at the COP26 Climate Change Conference, which is taking place in Glasgow this week.
In an interview with Bloomberg Television at the climate summit, the Prime Minister said his government will introduce legislation on renewables to help Greece become one of the main generators of offshore wind energy in the Mediterranean.
The Prime Minister said Greece is ready to approve the country’s first climate law “this week.” For some time, the Greek government has been considering a legislative framework for offshore wind in the country.
In the speech at COP26, the Prime Minister said, “Greece as an EU member has set ambitious targets to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 and become climate neutral by 2050. We will soon pass the first climate law to ensure that there is an appropriate legal framework for the above actions.”
As highlighted earlier in 2021 by WindEurope, the Greek National Energy and Climate Plan envisages 7 GW of wind energy in the country by 2030. Currently Greece has 4 GW of wind energy installed, all onshore, covering 12% of its electricity demand.
Earlier this year, the Greek wind energy association ELETAEN completed a consultation for the framework for offshore wind. WindEurope noted that for it to be effective, it should consider defining an ambitious pipeline of projects and a schedule of auctions, ensuring stable revenues for projects via contracts for difference, investigating and allocating sites efficiently and offering financing for new infrastructure.
Until more details are released, it is not clear how many of WindEurope’s recommendations will be included in the framework for offshore wind. The deep waters off Greece mean floating wind will be key for exploiting the offshore wind resource there.
In June 2021, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners teamed up with Athens, Greece-based MYTILINEOS to develop offshore windfarms in Greek waters.
