Two large-scale investments have been announced that will bring offshore wind manufacturing to the Humber region and northeast of England
UK Business & Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng has announced South Korean company SeAH Wind Ltd is to build a monopile fabrication facility in the UK and that fabricator Smulders is to build transition pieces for offshore wind.
The government said more than 1,000 jobs will be created as a result of the plans, which are being supported by money provided by the Johnson administration.
On top of its own investment, SeAH Wind Ltd and Smulders Projects UK will each receive grant funding out of the £160M (US$222M) Offshore Wind Manufacturing Investment Support scheme announced by the Prime Minister last year as part of his Ten Point Plan to build factories that will develop components for next-generation wind turbines.
The new facilities on the Humber and at Wallsend in Newcastle-upon-Tyne will boost the UK’s offshore wind manufacturing base and supply components to offshore windfarms in the UK and for export.
SeAH Wind Ltd will receive funding towards a new £117M monopile foundation factory at the Able Marine Energy Park on the Humber, creating up to 750 direct jobs by 2030. As reported previously by OWJ, SeAH hopes to break ground for the new facility later in 2021; initial production is set for the first quarter of 2023, and SeAH aims to produce more than 100 monopiles a year, which would account for much of UK demand.
Smulders Projects UK will receive funding towards a £70M investment in new equipment and infrastructure to enable the manufacture of offshore wind turbine transition pieces at the company’s existing site at Wallsend.
The Business and Energy Secretary said, “Wind is one of the UK’s greatest natural assets and we’re a world-leader in offshore wind energy. With the largest installed capacity of offshore wind in the world, we are determined to grow and nurture a strong, world-class manufacturing base so British businesses and our workforce can fully seize the economic benefits being a windy island nation brings.
“Today’s investments will not only put the wind in the sails of the UK’s industrial heartlands, creating and supporting thousands of good quality jobs, they will also benefit the whole of Britain as we work to onshore more manufacturers, attract inward investment and ramp up export opportunities.”
Minister for Investment Gerry Grimstone said, “The UK is well-established as having the largest offshore wind capacity of any country. These investments highlight how we are building a manufacturing base that reflects our position as a world leader in this key technology and the attractiveness of the UK’s clean energy sector to international investors.
“UK workers will be building the next generation of wind turbines that will not only help us meet our own climate change commitments but will be exported and can power countries all over the globe in a cleaner, greener future.”
SeAH Steel Holdings Corporation chief operating officer Joosung Lee said, “Based on the active support and trust of the UK Government, SeAH’s investment in a monopile factory is in full swing.”
The announcement follows another made in March this year when the government provided up to £95M to establish two new ports on the Humber and on Teesside to enable manufacturers to build the next-generation of offshore wind projects. In addition, GE Renewable Energy has announced an investment in a blade manufacturing plant, the first investment on Teesside.
Welcoming the announcement, RenewableUK chief executive Dan McGrail said “This shows what can be achieved by industry and government working together to create new opportunities in parts of the country which need levelling up most.
“The offshore wind sector is delivering industrial benefits to the UK, reinvigorating coastal communities and growing a globally competitive supply chain. Private companies are investing billions in innovative clean technology and creating tens of thousands of high-quality jobs. This is underpinned by the government’s commitment to quadruple our offshore wind capacity by 2030.
“Today’s announcement provides vital new industrial capacity which will help us achieve that goal. This is a landmark year for renewable energy with the UK hosting the COP26 summit in November – announcements like this demonstrate what building back better after the pandemic looks like in practice.”
