In the dynamic world of maritime operations, the pursuit of quality culture stands as a beacon amid the shifting tides of compliance and technological evolution
In a recent Riviera Maritime Media webinar, Transitioning to a quality culture through voluntary self-assessment, industry experts Stephenson Harwood marine director Rod Johnson and InterManager secretary general Captain Kuba Szymanski delivered insights into the nuances of fostering a culture of excellence in maritime operations.
Mr Johnson stressed the importance of not allowing the pursuit of decarbonisation and digitalisation to compromise safety and highlighted the need for practical considerations and real-world perspectives when implementing new technologies.
He cautioned against overlooking the challenges posed by emerging technologies, such as the safe handling of alternative fuels such as ammonia and methanol.
Capt Szymanski echoed Mr Johnson’s sentiments, emphasising the need for a balanced approach. He stressed the importance of involving end-users in the development and implementation of new technologies to ensure their safety and effectiveness and urged technologists to prioritise the needs and concerns of those working on ships, rather than pushing solutions that may not address real-world challenges.
The discussion underscored the necessity of maintaining a focus on safety amid the industry’s push towards sustainability and digitalisation.
Both panellists agreed that embracing innovation is crucial for progress, it must be done in a manner that prioritises the well-being of maritime personnel and safeguards against potential risks. As the industry continues to evolve, finding this balance will be essential for ensuring a safe and sustainable future for maritime operations.
