HaiSea Marine, majority owned by Haisla Nation in partnership with Seaspan ULC, has completed a floating operations facility as a base for its fleet of electric and LNG-fuelled tugs
This facility was recently named Zewén and blessed by the Haisla Nation. It is now ready to be transported up the Douglas Channel to Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada.
It will be the base for HaiSea’s marine operations and vessel maintenance as it supports gas carriers calling at LNG Canada’s LNG production and export terminal in western Canada.
HaiSea has a fleet of three battery-powered harbour tugs and two dual-fuel LNG-diesel escort tugs, all built by Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey to Robert Allan Ltd designs and sailed to Vancouver since Q3 2023.
Zewén was purpose-built and designed to withstand the extreme tidal range in the Kitimat area, with a large workshop, common areas and accommodation for eight shore-based personnel to use during working hours.
It was built by Pacific Marine Construction on Wei Wai Kum territory in Campbell River and will be towed to Kitimat.
“As a modern marine start-up, we were able to develop HaiSea from the ground-up in partnership with the Haisla Nation, with feedback from our mariners,” said Seaspan Marine Transportation senior vice president Jordan Pechie.
“We had the remarkable opportunity to build our culture and our assets, like Zewén, to support an inclusive and diverse team. It features single enclosed bathrooms and changing rooms, which in 2024 is the baseline expectation.”
LNG Canada chief executive Jason Klein said the floating facility will be a comfortable base for mariners and for the tugs.
“It will symbolise progress and opportunities for the Haisla Nation, and prioritises the safety of people and partners,” he said.
