Fugro has begun a four-month marine site characterisation campaign for Vattenfall at two offshore wind development sites off the coast of Norfolk in the UK
The data from Fugro’s geotechnical investigations will feed into the ground model for the Norfolk Vanguard and Norfolk Boreas windfarms, which will have a total installed capacity of 3.6 GW.
Working from its DP2 dynamically positioned geotechnical drill ship Fugro Scout, Fugro is undertaking surveys and sampling using its Seacalf Mk V DeepDrive cone penetration testing system.
The company will carry out testing both in situ and at the company’s laboratories in Wallingford, UK, and Nootdorp in the Netherlands.
The site characterisation work is split across two projects: the first will help Vattenfall optimise the wind turbine foundation engineering design; the second will help the developer select the most efficient cable route from the onshore substation to the turbines.
As highlighted by OWJ, Vattenfall secured consent from the UK Government for the development of Norfolk Vanguard in early July 2020.
A decision on planning for Norfolk Boreas is due to be announced in October 2020.
