Damen Shipyards has chosen thrusters to be fitted on a series of newbuild azimuth stern drive (ASD) tugs it is building in China for various owners
Schottel has secured orders for eight RudderPropellers (SRPs) for four compact vessels suitable for handling ships in small harbours and congested waterways.
Damen is constructing these ASD 1810 tugs at its facilities in Changde in China, initially for its own stock, with the first scheduled for completion and ready for sale this year.
These vessels will have an overall length of 18 m and a beam of 10 m, while the propulsion will give these multipurpose tugs a bollard pull of 30 tonnes.
For each, Schottel will supply two SRP 270 units with a propeller diameter of 1.9 m and power rating of 1,000 kW.
DuroVario LS slipping clutches will allow for smooth acceleration and improved handling of the thrusters, said Schottel.
If needed, the slipping clutches can be upgraded to support off-ship fire-fighting capabilities, while these tugs can also be fitted with a deck crane and oil pollution control equipment.
“We designed the ASD 1810 series with a specific focus on sustainability,” said Damen tugs product portfolio manager Siebe Cieraad.
“In addition to ensuring low noise emissions and vibrations, the 1810 design features an electric power generation system which eliminates the need for a third diesel generator to provide power while the vessel is sailing. This further reduces fuel consumption and improves the tug’s sustainability performance.”
Schottel said the robust design and long service life of these SRPs leads to low maintenance requirements and long, uninterrupted operating periods during the vessel’s entire lifetime.
“At the same time, Schottel guarantees long-term availability of spare parts and provides a dense global network of subsidiaries offering service support when and where needed,” said Schottel.
