Two new ferries under construction in Switzerland for General Navigation Company (GNC) will be equipped with high-speed engines and related emissions control after-treatment systems supplied by Wärtsilä
Operating on Lake Geneva between Switzerland and France, these 60-m, 700-passenger ferries are being built at the Shiptec yard in Switzerland for the Lausanne-based ferry operator.
The Wärtsilä 14 engines chosen for this project are compliant with the stringent EU Stage V emissions standard for inland waterway vessels, which came into force in the EU in 2020. The Wärtsilä 14 engines will integrate with advanced hybrid energy and propulsion systems.
“Minimising the emissions from their operations is of great importance to CGN, and these new vessels are designed to operate cleanly and efficiently,” said Shiptec head of naval architecture and engineering Martin Einsiedler. “The Wärtsilä engine was chosen with this criteria very much in mind,” said Mr Einsiedler.
CGN Group operates a fleet of steamboat paddlewheel, diesel-electric paddlewheel and contemporary vessels on Lake Geneva and has a history that stretches back well over 100 years.
The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery beginning in mid-2021, and the first vessel is expected to commence commercial operations in December 2022. The second ferry will be delivered in Q4 2023.
The Wärtsilä 14 high-speed engine is available in 12- and 16-cylinder configurations, with a power output between 749 and 1,340 kW in mechanical propulsion, and between 675 and 1,155 kW in auxiliary generating set and diesel-electric propulsion applications.
