Ørsted has signed a contract with Taiwanese supplier partner Woen-Jinn for array cable installation for the Greater Changhua offshore wind projects, a deal that will see the Taiwanese company invest in a new cable-laying vessel.
Woen-Jinn hopes the deal and acquisition of the vessel will enable it to become competitive in the offshore wind cable installation market throughout Asia. The contract with Ørsted requires Woen-Jinn to install a significant volume of array cables and will secure a substantial backlog of work for it.
The financial terms of the deal allow Woen-Jinn to invest in the cable-lay vessel.
Since it began working with Ørsted, Woen-Jinn has hired an additional 20 staff and is planning further recruitment to help deliver the array cable contract. To attract and train more people, Woen-Jinn has signed a memorandum of understanding with National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology and is discussing academic collaboration with National Taiwan Ocean University and National Cheng Kung University. The company plans to provide scholarships to students interested in marine engineering and internships.
Ørsted said it believed that collaboration will not only provide Woen-Jinn with opportunities but will also help its partner become competitive in the offshore wind cable installation market in Asia.
Established in 1985, Kaohsiung-based Woen-Jinn has a track record of undertaking large offshore telecommunication and power cable installation projects in Taiwan. It also completed offshore cable installation for Phase One of the Formosa 1 project, the first offshore wind project in Taiwan.
Asia’s growing offshore wind energy sector and opportunities in it will be among the subjects discussed at Offshore Support Journal’s upcoming Asian Offshore Support Journal Conference, which takes place 26-27 September 2018 in Singapore.
