Wind turbine giant Vestas is planning to build a manufacturing facility for components for offshore wind turbines in Japan following the award of funding from the Japanese Government
The company has been selected as one of the successful applicants for a Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) subsidy programme known as the ‘Programme for Promoting Investment in Japan to Strengthen Supply Chains (Second Call).’
The programme aims to strengthen the country’s supply chain networks by supporting essential products, parts, and materials. Eligible products include offshore wind turbine parts and components.
To enhance the country’s existing wind energy supply chain, Vestas said it plans to develop an assembly facility in Japan, subject to it being selected by successful clients bidding in upcoming annual auctions for offshore windfarms in the country, and to this process creating sufficient volume each year.
The company said the facility would build modules and assemble nacelles for offshore wind turbines.
Vestas Asia Pacific president and chief executive Purvin Patel said, “Vestas is proud to be selected for this programme and we are committed to partnering with the Japanese Government, customers and local industry to develop a sustainable offshore wind industry.
“Leveraging this programme, we believe our plans will enhance the country’s supply chain, create green jobs, and contribute to Japan’s net-zero ambitions by 2050.”
272 applications were made under the programme. Vestas is one of 151 companies that were selected after a screening process and is one of seven applicants offering offshore wind energy solutions.
The company said that, depending on demand and the cost-competitiveness of Japan’s wind energy market, working closely with MHI Vestas Japan Co Ltd, the joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd and Vestas, it will consider establishing other parts of its regional supply chain in the country.
