Join Riviera Maritime Media editor Craig Jallal and Ocean Technologies Group chief creative officer Raal Harris as they discuss how ESG should not be seen as a challenge but a roadmap to a better company culture
Mr Harris notes that alternative fuels and the range of new technology coming on board ships requires a different type of seafarer with a different set of skills. While these skills can be identified and training provided, Mr Harris thinks we also need to look beyond technical skills, to people that are intuitive problem solvers with good empathy and communication skills, along with the resilience and robustness to cope with an evolving industry.
This combination of high-level skills and the right mental attitude will be in high demand, and the shipping industry will face further competition from outside for such candidates. Focussing on ESG will set the tone of the company culture, and a strong company culture provides other benefits, too he argues, such as better decision making and investment in people.
