Shipboard carbon capture is seen as a vital bridging technology to low- and zero-carbon marine fuels, offering shipowners the opportunity to start their decarbonisation journey with currently available fuels. While carbon capture has been used in the industrial sector for decades, marinising the technology for shipboard use poses a number of challenges, including power, space and storage.
One maritime technology provider working hard on solutions is Ecospray. It has no less than three distinct shipboard carbon capture solutions in development.
“The idea behind this is to have the right solution for any type of ship”, Ecospray general manager Dr Alberto Di Cecio tells Marine Propulsion. Ecospray expects to deploy its first system this year in a pilot project, with commercial availability by 2023.
In this podcast at SMM 2022 in Hamburg, Germany, Dr Di Cecio provides insight on the technologies that Ecospray is using in its shipboard carbon capture solutions, as well as the company’s efforts on bioLNG, methane slip reduction and fuel cells.
