We spoke with Martin Bardi, VP of global sales for Navis Carrier and Vessel Solutions, about the factors behind these rising container losses and some of the technology that is available to support shipowners, masters and the crew in lowering the risks of these costly incidents.
There has been a dramatic increase in the frequency of lost containers at sea. According to the World Shipping Council, the average number of containers lost at sea was 3,113 for the period between 2020 and 2021, well above the three-year average of 779 per year for the period between 2017 and 2019. What factors are behind these container losses and how can the container ship industry mitigate the commercial and safety risks associated with these incidents?
