Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells Conference, 2023

09:00 - 18:00
Bergen, Norway

Towards a greener future for the shipping industry

We are delighted that our annual Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells Conference will return to Bergen on 17-19 October 2023.

Hybrid, electric and hydrogen fuel-cell technologies continue to drive the transition to a greener maritime industry. Although the industry is striving to develop new technologies that may be adopted in the future, it’s more important to work with what technology is available now if we are meet global net-zero emission targets.

This year’s agenda, delivered by leading authorities in the sector, will discuss and debate crucial topics including:

  • The latest on the international regulatory landscape
  • EU initiatives addressing green shipping
  • What is expected to meet demands from investors and banks going forward
  • Rethinking energy storage – meeting the demands of today’s maritime industry
  • Status of the green shift in the maritime industry
  • Approaches to aligning battery and fuel cell technologies
  • Next-generation technologies for electrification and hybridisation of offshore vessels
  • Design challenges for use of fuel cells on vessels
  • Short-sea and deep-sea vessels: what is possible?
  • Retrofitting vessels to future-proof fleets
  • What opportunities does the green agenda offer the maritime industry, and how can companies capitalise?
  • The offshore and in port charging conundrum

The 4th Annual event brings together leading maritime and shipping industry players in Bergen for 3 days of compelling debate, knowledge sharing and unrivalled networking. Leading authorities with a solid understanding of next-generation hybrid, electric and hydrogen fuel cell technologies will discuss the possibilities, opportunities and challenges facing the sector.

We are excited to announce a unique opportunity to visit the Havila Pollux vessel in the Port of Bergen at the end of DAY 1 (17 October)
Maritime Mingle hosted by Norwegian Electric Systems and Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells Conference.

Join us on Havila Pollux for a seminar on maritime innovations and a tour of its state-of-the-art tech – a nod to its sister ship’s 2022 Next Generation Ship Award (places are limited). The tour will be followed by food and drinks reception at Jekteviksterminalen for a vibrant networking session.

Transition to emission-free commuting on water

The acronym TECOW stands for the EU funded project, which aims to develop and produce the first hydrogen driven high-speed ferries. However, it is not only about technology. Green City Ferries has over its ten years experienced what are the real problems for the transition. By definition, big changes cannot be executed within existing systems, rules, and regulations. Recently UN General Secretary Guterres said that the technology is there, but we lack decisions. True, but it is not the whole story. Today’s systems solve yesterday’s problems. We need new ways of working to succeed with the transition and solve today’s problems.

The future of vessels in the shipping industry: a comprehensive vision of the potential for digitalisation in the sector

The marine industry is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the market and emerging technologies. At the forefront, the potential for developing autonomous vessels, digitalisation, and environmental commitments such as decarbonisation. Other factors may be related, such as a global increase in demand for maritime transport and fuel prices which, in effect, are triggering vessel projects with new concepts and designs, including electrification and alternative fuel sources. Considering this, the push towards a low-carbon future has extended to the maritime industry, where electric vessels are gaining increasing attention as a solution to reduce emissions and improve sustainability. This presentation provides an overview of the future of vessels in navigation, including a case study of the company Hidrovias do Brasil in the electrification of its fleet through electric pushers, considered the first manoeuvring hybrid pusher in the world, as an agent in the decarbonisation of the sector.
