Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference, Awards and Exhibition 2019
Strategising for profitable and compliant tanker operations
The Tanker Shipping & Trade, Conference, Awards & Exhibitions brings professionals from across the global Tanker Shipping and Trade industry to London for meaningful discussion and practical insights into the business, operational and technical issues that will impact the crude, product and chemical tanker trades in the year ahead.
This year’s theme: Strategising for profitable and compliant tanker operations
Profitable operations
As the tanker industry enters the final quarter of the year board level executives throughout the tanker owning and operating community will converge in London to get a steer on where the market opportunities lie in the year ahead as well as benchmark their company policies and pay scales.
Compliant operations
Compliance operations are a tanker owners ticket to trade. The most significant concern facing tanker operators is IMO 2020 compliance. There are question marks over enforcement and risks of fuel contamination and associated engine problems. There are a mix of other environmental regulations on the horizons that present particular challenges for the industry. And of course the ever-present requirements of charterers. Join us in November in London to address these issues and gather useful intelligence that you can feed into your operating schedules, business plan and strategy for the year ahead.
Why this conference is a must-attend:
- Expert insight on where the market is heading in 2020.
- Learn how leaders’ owners will balance regulatory and commercial pressures over the next 12 months.
- Attend streamed sessions on coatings, vetting and tanker safety and security.
- Benefit from the major focus on leadership and safety management, fleet efficiency and manpower.
- Get clarity on what charterers are looking for from owners in 2020 and what owners can expect from charterers.
- INTERTANKO Breakfast Briefing - practical compliance with the 2020 sulphur cap regulations. (INTERTANKO members only).
- Come away with what you need to know on emissions; asbestos; recycling.
- Network with the global owner/operator community.
- Well supported by the industry’s supply chain. Understand where technology is heading.
Networking and celebrating excellence:
- Our dinner and awards providing an excellent social setting for meeting, renewing and making new industry contacts
- Our exhibition is the ideal forum to market products and services to the industry’s decision makers
- We celebrate industry success at the Tanker Shipping & Trade Awards at our Tanker Shipping & Trade Dinner at the end of day one.

10.10 SESSION 6: TANKER INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP AND TANKER SAFETY MANAGEMENT
PANEL DISCUSSION: Tanker owners and shipmanagers often cite leadership at sea and ashore as their number one challenge. The STCW Manila Amendments and Elements I and 2 of TMSA 3 are well-intentioned (and inextricably linked with Elements 3, 7 and 8), but have they delivered a cultural shift in leadership behaviours that will actually avoid future accidents?
Chairman: Phil Parry, Chairman, Spinnaker Global

Rob Drysdale, Director, Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF)
Philip Belcher, Marine Director, INTERTANKO
Carsten Ostenfeldt, Managing Director, Anglo-Eastern
Marc Forster, Global Marine Standards Manager, RightShip
11.00 A "HOT" (Human, organisational and technical) approach to safety
Rather than focusing on the integrity of technology (e.g. robust equipment) or the organization (e.g. certification of
management systems) or the human element (e.g. safety culture) in isolation, the added value comes from providing expert support in each of the HOT elements.
- Lessons learned from beyond the tanker industry
- Case study: Lessons’ learned for mooring processes, in light of MSMP
Fenna van de Merwe, Principal Consultant, Safety, Risk & Reliability, DNV GL - Maritime Advisory
11.20 Networking coffee break in the exhibition area

12.50 SESSION 7 PART II : WHAT MAKES FOR AN EFFICIENT TANKER FLEET?
How efficient is your fleet management organisation? Do you get value for money? Do your superintendents cost you more but manage more ships than your competitors’ superintendents? This session will look at staff-to-vessel ratios, regional salary trends since the September 2008 crash, future fleet management workforce planning and the impact of crew demographics on succession planning.
Chairman: Phil Parry, Chairman, Spinnaker Global

DEBATE : Is it time for the tanker industry to man up?
This will take the form of a parliamentary debate with opposing sides debating the motion: Is it time for the tanker industry to man up?
The debate will draw on / take inspiration from BIMCO-ICS Manpower Reports, widely regarded as the most comprehensive assessment of global supply of and demand for seafarers. The 2015 Report built on updates conducted in 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010. This ongoing intensive study has two main purposes: to describe the current worldwide supply and demand situation for seafarers; and to make predictions about the likely position in 5-10 years’ time, both designed to help the industry anticipate developments and take appropriate action.
In anticipation of the next update to the report, this session will review the predictions made in the 2015 report and gather audience input with a view to providing BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping with feedback and suggestions based upon the real-life experiences of tanker owners and operators.
Chairman: Phil Parry, Chairman, Spinnaker Global
Vijay Rangroo, Managing Director, MTM Ship Management
Bob Bishop, Executive Director, V.Ships
Aron Frank Sørensen, Head of Maritime Technology & Regulation, BIMCO
