TUGNOLOGY '15

With a record 373 registered delegates from 37 countries all across the globe, this Tugnology was our most successful to date.
Papers provided plenty to discuss and debate, on subjects ranging from gas and electric powered tugs, antifouling on harbour vessels and engine and equipment developments, to innovative design and crew comfort, both in the conference hall, and exhibition and relaxation areas.
The event kicked off on Monday 18 May with a reception hosted by Damen Shipyards aboard Silver Sturgeon, which took delegates and guests down the Thames to Greenwich to witness the Christening of Rotortug RT Evolution by Elizabeth Brunton-Reed, wife of The ABR Company’s chairman Allan Brunton-Reed.
Allan officially opened the event on Tuesday 19 May, welcoming many long-term friends and supporters along with those enjoying Tugnology for the first time. Just over half (52 per cent) of delegates attending had been to a previous Tugnology, and more than two thirds (68 per cent) had been to a previous ABR Company event.
The inaugural address was given by Capt Don Cockrill, chairman of the United Kingdom Maritime Pilots’ Association.
The announcement from exhibitors of a major deal between Svitzer and Damen, and Robert Allan Ltd celebrating 85 years in business by presenting a certificate to Ken Lo, director of Cheoy Lee Shipyards, marking the building of its 85th RAL vessel, meant that Champagne flowed.
Tea and coffee breaks were sponsored by MTU, the professional photographer was sponsored by Caterpillar and JonRie InterTech sponsored the WiFi.
Uzmar Workboat & Tug Factory sponsored lunch on both days, enabling delegates to recharge their batteries for the afternoon conference sessions, before pre-dinner drinks sponsored by Samson and dinner sponsored by Damen. The relaxed atmosphere of the drinks reception and dinner itself enabled further top flight networking and the chance to catch up with friends and contacts.
Feedback from delegates has been very positive. Here are some examples:
“A melting pot for tug professionals with a good balance of topics.”
Marco Goiach, Wartsila Italy.
“A very well organised conference. Good technical content from the papers and venue to meet experts in the field.”
Ricky Chan, ABB.
“A unique and exceptional opportunity to meet the tug and salvage community.”
Stéphane Jacquemond, Twin Disc International.
