Wind and weather sensing technology is revolutionising wind-assisted shipping
Date: Wednesday 20 September - Time: 09:00-10:00 BST |

Wind-assisted propulsion uses wind power and advanced sails to optimise vessel performance, reduce emissions and promote sustainability in shipping. To unlock the full potential of wind-assisted propulsion, precise and reliable real-time wind monitoring is essential. Traditional wind sensors often lack precision or fail to maximise the benefits of wind power. Recent technological advances in marine-proof ultrasonic wind sensors and lidar-based remote wind measurement offer ship operators accurate data on wind speed, direction and environmental factors. These measurements enable operators to fine-tune sails and wind propulsion systems, resulting in peak performance, lower fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions.
Join our expert panel as they present on the following topics and field your questions:
Konstantinos Fakiolas, CEO, Newbuildings & Ship Projects, FinOcean Ltd
- Overview of wind-assisted ship propulsion markets, recent developments and challenges in the area of wind monitoring
Mikko Nikkanen, Head of Maritime, Vaisala and Benjamin Coulmier, Solution Manager, Vaisala
- How to use wind and weather sensing technologies for performance optimisation and further designs of wind-assisted vessels
Jukka Kuuskoski, Chief Sales Officer, Norsepower
- Current challenges in measuring undisturbed wind for better optimisation of wind-assisted vessels
- Case study: Remote wind monitoring using windcube nacelle lidar
