A combination of fuels will enable the industry to considerably reduce emissions
The main fuels will be methane, biofuels, methanol and ammonia, says Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping head of ship technology systems, Peter Lystrup Christensen.
He believes environmental e-fuels will be available to maritime in the future as there are initiatives to facilitate this. However, other fuels will help the shipping industry through the energy transition, such as methanol and LNG.
During an interview at Riviera’s fifth Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cell Conference in Bergen, Norway, Mr Christensen says the focus now is on identifying and filling the gaps in technology, expertise and availability of these fuels for future adoption.
He also expects batteries and electrification pathways to be further developed in parallel with fuel projects.
A key takeaway from attending the conference is aligning the main developers, vessel owners and stakeholders in the drive towards maritime decarbonisation.
Riviera’s Maritime Decarbonisation Conference Asia, will be held in Singapore, 15-16 April 2024 where experts and shipowners will examine the most viable decarbonisation pathways for Asia’s shipping industry. This conference will bring together the latest thinking and developments on net-zero strategies, regulations, technologies, supply chain maturity and economics.
