Ardmore Shipping Services’ Garry Noonan discusses how the company leverages AI tools to optimise operations and improve employee productivity
In his video interview at the 2025 Chemical & Product Tanker Conference, director of innovation at Ardmore Shipping Services, Garry Noonan, shared insights into how the company is using artificial intelligence (AI) to drive marginal gains across its operations.
Mr Noonan explained Ardmore’s approach to AI focuses on implementing tools such as Microsoft Copilot, a versatile AI agent builder, to enhance day-to-day operations and optimise voyage management.
“We have established processes to integrate AI into our voyage management systems, focusing on small but impactful improvements,” said Mr Noonan.
He noted the integration of Microsoft Copilot as a standard tool across the company is helping employees make marginal gains in their everyday tasks, enhancing productivity without overhauling existing workflows.
By embedding AI into routine operations, Ardmore Shipping Services has found a way to optimise its processes incrementally, rather than pushing for sweeping changes.
During the panel discussions at the conference, Mr Noonan’s contribution shed light on the practical applications of AI in the maritime industry.
His thoughts on using AI to support operational decision-making aligned with the broader themes of the conference, where digital transformation and the evolving role of technology were central topics.
"AI is not just a tool for large-scale overhauls," he remarked. "It is about identifying small improvements that accumulate to yield substantial benefits over time."
As Mr Noonan’s video interview succinctly highlights, Ardmore Shipping’s use of AI is not about chasing flashy technological breakthroughs but rather focusing on efficiency and practical application.
This philosophy of achieving steady, consistent improvements resonates well with the industry’s need for sustainable, incremental changes in operational practices.
Mr Noonan’s insights on AI were well received by conference delegates, who recognised the value in using technology to support traditional practices without disrupting existing systems. His approach offers a model for other companies looking to integrate AI in a measured, results-driven way.
