The availability of alternative fuels could be a challenge for owners as the shipping industry slides towards decarbonisation
Smit Lamnalco global director for LNG business and project development Andrew Brown discusses fuel availability and other challenges during a video interview at Riviera’s 27th ITS Convention, Exhibition & Awards, in Dubai.
He talks about how the shipping and ports sectors need to meet the many regulatory demands being imposed for decarbonisation.
Touching on shipping’s journey so far, he discusses the progress that has been made and details how he anticipates the industry will develop and adapt over the coming years and decades, as IMO’s targets inch closer and new legislation and economic incentives are introduced.
Mr Brown also focuses on training and the demands being made on tug owners to meet changing levels of competency.
He suggests tug owners need to invest in tugs ready to use various fuels, and rely on fuel availability in ports, countries and regions. Owners may need to consider running on one type of fuel in one area and another type in another.
Now is the time to start looking at availability, technologies and the training requirements for operating tugs on particular fuels.
