Fairplay Towage Group managing director Holger Schwesig outlines tug and towage safety, regional operations and future demand for more powerful tugs
Mr Schwesig says Fairplay Towage operates a fleet of 100 tugs in four countries in northern Europe and explains why it is in the middle of a newbuilding investment campaign to modernise the fleet. Fairplay has received four of seven tugs ordered from Damen Shipyards and three more are coming by the end of 2023.
Mr Schwesig says the newbuilding programme is modernising the fleet after a prolonged period of inactive investment.
He is concerned shipowners are not taking harbour operational safety seriously enough.
There has been a trend of shipowners requiring a higher bollard pull from harbour and coastal towage tugs, which will influence Fairplay’s ongoing and future investments, Mr Schwesig says.
