Global support is needed from maritime states to facilitate the adoption of green hydrogen as a source of energy and fuels in the shipping industry
Norwegian Hydrogen head of maritime Jørgen Kopperstad says government funding is starting to filter into maritime projects, raising interest in vessel owners seeking hydrogen from renewable sources.
But this is not enough to enable the industry to reach its targets to cut emissions and get to net zero. Therefore, there is a need for support from governments to invest in green hydrogen production and the infrastructure required for delivering it to ships, thus enabling its adoption worldwide.
Mr Kopperstad says in an interview at Riviera’s Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cell Conference in Bergen, Norway, that more vessels will be operating on hydrogen fuel in the future.
He says vessels carrying wood pellets to power plants in Europe will have green propulsion to demonstrate zero-emissions transport.
Riviera’s Maritime Decarbonisation Conference Asia, will be held in Singapore, 15-16 April 2024 where experts and shipowners will examine the most viable decarbonisation pathways for Asia’s shipping industry. This conference will bring together the latest thinking and developments on net zero strategies, regulations, technologies, supply chain maturity and economics.
