The increasing number of ships powered by onboard energy storage systems is raising the risk of vessel and cargo losses
DNV Maritime Advisory senior environmental consultant Henrik Helgesen describes the safety risks involved when installing large modules of batteries on ships, and guidance to prevent thermal runaway and onboard fires, during an interview at Riviera’s Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cell Conference, which took place in Bergen, Norway.
The European Maritime Safety Agency has provided guidance on battery installations, and it is included in international regulations, class rules and recommendations.
Industry needs an open mind and to share experience and best practices, says Mr Helgesen. He explains the balance required when tackling fires and preventing explosions, such as whether battery rooms should be ventilated and whether batteries should be cooled by water or air.
Riviera’s Maritime Decarbonisation Conference Asia, will be held in Singapore, 15-16 April 2024 where experts and shipowners will examine the most viable decarbonisation pathways for Asia’s shipping industry. This conference will bring together the latest thinking and developments on net zero strategies, regulations, technologies, supply chain maturity and economics.
