A Dutch shipowner has taken delivery of escort tugboats from a Turkish shipbuilder to support BP’s huge LNG production and export project in West Africa
Kotug International has welcomed two more escort tugs to its fleet supporting a major LNG production project in West Africa.
The Dutch shipowner has added SD Rosso and SD Chatboul to its fleet working in Senegal on BP’s Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas project.
The two tugboats of a five-vessel construction campaign by Uzmar Shipyard in Turkey for Kotug will provide towage and marine services at the LNG export project spanning Mauritania and Senegal.
Kotug is operating SD Djoudj, completed in Q2 2025 and SD Waalo, which joined the fleet in Q3 2024, in Senegal for GTA.
These tugs are built to Robert Allan Ltd’s RAstar 3200-W design with 80 tonnes of bollard pull coming from two Caterpillar main diesel four-stroke, high-speed engines turning two azimuth thrusters, and have FiFi1 off-ship fire-fighting systems and escort-class winches.
SD Chatboul was sailing along the African coast and SD Rosso has arrived in Senegal, according to automatic identification system (AIS) data, in late July.
BP’s GTA offshore project includes a floating production storage and offloading vessel and a floating LNG production, storage and offloading facility,
“We are providing essential towage and marine services for the region’s cutting-edge LNG infrastructure,” said Kotug. “This is another step forward in strengthening our presence in West Africa.”
Another Turkish shipyard has completed a tugboat for African operations. Tugboat Manda, construction number NB37, was built by Boğaziçi Shipyard under contract from Kenya Shipyard for Kenya Ports Authority to deploy in the Port of Mombasa.
This 27-m vessel has a traction pull of 35 tonnes and a FiFi-class fire-fighting system. It completed sea trials in the Marmara Sea during June and was stationed at Yalova, Turkey, in late July, according to AIS information.
