Vessels moored permanently in offshore windfarms to support maintenance and operations are perfect candidates for electric power and propulsion
These service operation vessels (SOVs) could be built ready to plug into a turbine or substation at offshore windfarms to cut emissions.
Damen Shipyards design and proposal engineer Rebecca Belmer expects this concept to become a reality within the next few years when technology and naval architecture is ready.
A field test of the offshore charging system has already been successful, she said in an interview at Riviera’s Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cell Conference in Bergen, Norway.
Ms Belmer said there is at least one tender for SOVs from a windfarm operator which includes a request for an electric-powered SOV with the ability to charge offshore.
Damen has several designs for offshore windfarm support vessels, including SOVs and vessels to support turbine commissioning, CSOVs. These are larger, more flexible and have increased accommodation.
