Dr Paul Balcombe highlights some of the findings of a study on methane and CO2 emissions from LNG carrier ships
Interviewed at Riviera Maritime Media’s LNG Shipping & Terminals Conference, Europe 2022 in London in November, Dr Paul Balcombe highlights some of the findings of a study on methane and CO2 emissions from LNG carrier ships.
“To our knowledge nobody has looked across total methane emissions across an LNG carrier ship,” Dr Balcombe said, explaining the process behind gathering data for the study, which investigated methane emissions from the engines, vents and accidental or fugitive emissions from leaks.
One of the interesting findings from the study was that CO2 emissions from the propulsion and generators were about one-third lower than previous estimates. Additionally, only two small leaks of methane emissions were discovered during the month-long journey aboard the LNG carrier. However, Dr Balcombe noted that a slightly higher methane slip was uncovered from the engine than expected.
