Value Group cofounder and director Christiaan Nijst outlines how the company’s carbon capture system is being deployed on ships, tested for greenhouse use, and positioned for scaleable roll-out
In this interview, Christiaan Nijst, co-founder and director of Value Group (Value Maritime & Value Carbon), discusses the practical deployment of onboard carbon capture systems in the maritime sector.
Recorded at the CO2 Shipping & Terminals Conference 2025 held on 17 June 2025 at the Waldorf Hilton Hotel in London, Mr Nijst outlines the company’s compact rotating packed bed technology, which captures CO2 and sulphur directly from ship exhausts for shore-based purification and reuse.
He shares results from a six-month trial with Wageningen University using captured CO2 in greenhouses, showing no performance difference from conventional sources.
Mr Nijst also explains how fixed-route vessels – such as ferries and container ships – are key to building out scaleable infrastructure.
The conversation touches on compatibility with different marine fuels and the importance of connecting shipboard capture to global land-based storage and utilisation networks. This is a must-watch for anyone interested in commercially viable decarbonisation solutions at sea.
Riviera’s CO2 Shipping, Terminals & CCS Conference, Europe will be held in Milan on 8 September 2025. Use this link to register your interest and attend the event.
