A shipyard on Turkey’s Black Sea coast has launched a ship-escort tug to handle vessels in terminals that encounter demanding weather and sea conditions
Med Marine has launched newbuild ER131, a 28-m tugboat built for escorting ships at the world’s most demanding terminals.
It was built at its shipyard in Eregli as a MED-A2800 series tug to a Robert Allan Ltd RAstar 2800 design with 85 tonnes of bollard pull for ship handling, escort duties, coastal towage, pushing and mooring operations.
This vessel has a beam of 10 m, a draught of 6 m, speed of 12 knots, accommodation for eight crew members, and a FiFi1 class fire-fighting system.
Its propulsion consists of two high-speed diesel main engines driving two azimuth thrusters at the stern with fixed-pitch propellers housed in optimised nozzles.
Deck machinery consists of a winch forward of the wheelhouse and another aft. A towing hook is installed on the stern for towing and escorting ships and other operations in terminals.
Med Marine said this tug was constructed with durable welded steel and has a robust internal layout with watertight bulkheads forming dedicated zones for accommodation, tanks for storing fresh water, the engine and machinery room, diesel oil storage, the Z-drive compartment, and other tanks on the aft, “ensuring safety and structural integrity throughout its service life.”
The 28th International Tug & Salvage Convention, Exhibition & Awards will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden, in association with Caterpillar, 19-21 May 2026. Use this link for more details of this industry event and the associated social and networking opportunities.
