Emissions monitoring technology has been around for decades and is well proven. However, what is critical, says ABB global product line market manager Ben Goossens is proper installation of the gas analyser to ensure shipowners receive the correct measurement of their emissions. Using its digital services, ABB can remotely monitor the analyser is working correctly and check its ’health,’ he says.
In a conversation with Riviera Maritime Media executive editor and head of business relations Edwin Lampert, Mr Goossens notes that there shouldn’t be any concerns around cyber security or who owns the data. “It’s the customer. We are just reviewing it to, again, to provide feedback to the customer to say this is going on with your equipment.” He also notes whether the system has been cyber security tested and certified.
ABB is developing next-generation emissions monitoring systems, and shipowners might not be the only ones interested. He says there is increasing interest from governments in continuously measuring emissions from ships.
Mr Goossens presented on ‘Emission monitoring methods,’ at Maritime Air Pollution and Fuel Technologies Americas 2022 in Houston in April.
