One of the world’s major producers of ammonia is close to final investment decisions on several projects worldwide
As the shipping industry begins to build ships ready to run on ammonia fuel, there are plans to build the bunkering infrastructure and vessels. Several green ammonia production projects are planned to supply this zero-carbon fuel to shipping. Yara Clean Ammonia is close to final investment decisions on multiple projects worldwide as it is proactive in the market.
Yara Clean Ammonia manager of maritime products, Yang Zhang, says the company aims to install carbon capture and sequestration on existing ammonia production sites to ensure they produce environmentally friendly fuels in the future.
During an interview at Riviera’s Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cell Conference in Bergen, Norway, Ms Zhang said Yara is also investing in new plants to produce blue ammonia fuels by 2030.
She expects the off-take of blue ammonia in the shipping sector to begin in 2035 and to accelerate by 2040.
Yara is also looking at ways to lower the carbon intensity on its vessels transporting ammonia around the world. Its first ammonia-powered ship is likely to be in the water in 2026, from which Yara could gain operational experience.
