Ecosystems for reducing the environmental footprint from shipping need all components in the supply chain to achieve zero emissions
Adopting innovative technology will be key to enabling the shipping industry to cut its air emissions. The whole industry needs to collaborate in 2025 and beyond to create ecosystems and green shipping lanes to reduce emissions and drive towards total sector decarbonisation.
Association of Zero Emissions Ship Technology founder and secretary general, Madadh MacLaine, describes the technology enabling shipping to reach a target of absolute zero emissions.
This includes wind power, hydrogen fuel cells and battery systems, she says during an interview at Riviera’s Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cell Conference in Bergen, Norway.
The ecosystem to get to zero emissions needs all stakeholders moving in the same direction with owners, charterers, technology providers and fuel and energy generators all ready to meet these goals at the same time.
Up to 10 bunkering points will be required in the Baltic region to support zero-emissions shortsea shipping, with multiple owners committing to this target with different ship types.
Collaborative efforts and forums for implementing these technologies and investments are needed in 2025, says Ms MacLaine.
