Enclosed space safety in bulk carrier operations: a call for action

Date: Wednesday 9 April - Time: 14:00 - 15:00 BST

Watch now

The bulk carrier sector faces a critical challenge in addressing crew safety in enclosed spaces. All ranks face threats, but there is a disproportionate impact on leadership-level crew members, masters and chief officers, and there is an urgent need for systemic changes. Despite IMO regulations introduced in 2011 to prevent these incidents, fatalities have increased across the industry. There is now a clarion call for a fundamental rethink of ship design, operational safety procedures and regulatory approaches to safeguard seafarers’ lives.

Join us as we discuss

  • The rise in enclosed space incidents and the disproportionate impact on senior officers
  • Existing IMO regulations, including Resolution A.1050(27), and areas for improvement
  • How flawed vessel designs contribute to unsafe conditions and prevent effective rescues
  • Practical challenges in emergency response, including the use of breathing apparatuses in confined spaces
  • How inspection drones reduce confined space entry by safely accessing hard-to-reach areas
  • Industry-wide collaboration to implement human-centred design principles and develop safer operational practices.

Panellists:

Capt Kuba Szymanski, Secretary General, InterManager
Dr Claire Pekcan, Director, Safe Marine
Matteo Saglia, Product Specialist, Flyability
