Shipowner transporting LNG and petrochemical gases worldwide to improve connectivity for cloud-based applications on board and crew welfare
Anthony Veder is retrofitting all of its gas carriers with more advanced satellite communications to support cloud-based business applications and operational technology.
The LNG and petrochemical gas shipowner will install a bonded and hybrid communications system on each of its vessels following successful trials and beta testing on select ships.
Viasat subsidiary Inmarsat Maritime will provide its NexusWave solution on ships operating in coastal and deepsea markets, to deliver multi-dimensional high-speed connectivity and seamless communications.
NexusWave is a bonded network that brings together constellations of satellites in geostationary (GEO) and low Earth orbit (LEO) along with long-term evolution (LTE) cellular 4G and 5G services for unlimited data and global coverage.
Anthony Veder was involved in the development of NexusWave, particularly in testing this product on ships, to enable use of cloud-based applications for business and operational requirements, and for crew welfare services.
“Our contribution to the development of NexusWave in early concept meetings and beta trials helped to shape a solution that meets the evolving requirements of modern shipping,” said Anthony Veder’s digital lead for technology and IT support Jos Kooij.
“By combining the best of satellite and terrestrial technology, NexusWave delivers on its promise of connected confidence. We are particularly pleased with its capacity to support cloud-based business applications and advanced operational technology, which have exceeded our expectations.”
NexusWave provides Anthony Veder with satellite communications for improved crew welfare, delivering onboard internet connections at similar speeds encountered onshore, and enhanced cyber security.
“We chose to roll NexusWave out fleetwide after experiencing a step-change in our simultaneous crew and operational communications during trials,” said Anthony Veder chief information officer, Benne Engelen.
“With unparalleled continuity of service and network segregation, both leisure and business applications run as smoothly and securely as they would at home or in the office, helping us to meet our objective of fully connected maritime operations while maintaining a happy and motivated workforce.
“It fosters our culture of collaboration, really bridging the physical distance as no other product can at this time.”
Inmarsat said NexusWave uses “secure-by-design infrastructure and traffic encryption as standard” and offers enterprise-grade cybersecurity and segregates crew and business networks, adding another layer of protection.
Inmarsat intends to upgrade NexusWave in the future with the service launch of the high-capacity ViaSat-3 satellites, which will further enhance connectivity and operational capabilities.
