Luxcara adopts Ørsted’s low-noise foundation installation technology

The German developer said the technology will be used during the installation of foundations for offshore wind turbines across Luxcara’s offshore wind portfolio in Germany. 

The preliminary agreement builds on Luxcara’s interest in applying low-noise installation methods for European offshore wind projects.

Osonic is a patent-pending jetting technology that reduces resistance to penetration, enabling foundations to be installed more quietly into the seabed, with minimal impact on marine life. It can be used to replace conventional pile-driving.

Early examples of its use at Ørsted’s Gode Wind 3 offshore windfarm resulted in a significant reduction in underwater noise levels relative to the most commonly used installation method. Noise levels were reduced to a level just marginally above the ambient noise found in the German Bight in the North Sea.

In October 2025, Ørsted was awarded a German Sustainability Award for the technology. The jury said the technology “shows how the expansion of renewable energy and the protection of biodiversity can go hand in hand.”

Luxcara said Osonic’s proven performance in the North Sea, under similar conditions and with comparable foundation sizes to Luxcara’s projects, was a decisive factor in its decision to collaborate with Ørsted.

Luxcara director offshore wind and green hydrogen Holger Matthiesen said, “At Luxcara we have pursued a responsible and sustainable offshore strategy, which has enabled us to succeed in tenders that prioritise qualitative criteria. 

“Starting in 2022, Luxcara started looking into different low-noise offshore installation methods. We are pleased to now deepen our collaboration with Ørsted. Osonic’s proven performance under conditions comparable to our projects was a decisive factor for us to consider the innovative technology.”

Ørsted executive vice president and chief construction officer Patrick Harnett said, “By reaching an agreement with Luxcara, we’re taking Osonic from concept to a commercial offering. We are seeing increased interest from offshore wind developers across European key markets, and with this first landmark agreement, we’re laying the groundwork for broader adoption.”

Ørsted is to licence the technology and, under the preferred supplier agreement, will also act as an engineering, procurement and construction consultant to Luxcara for its deployment.
