Furetank’s tanker achieved fossil-free operation with renewable fuels during a call at the Port of Gothenburg
The Port of Gothenburg has received a call from a Furetank tanker operating fully on renewable fuels, confirming the company’s ability to conduct fossil-free voyages.
The arrival follows on from earlier reporting on Furetank’s transition to biogas using the mass balance system.
According to a statement from the Port of Gothenburg, the vessel’s operations were carried out entirely without fossil fuels, using renewable diesel and biogas. The port noted this demonstrated the potential for deepsea shipping to reduce its emissions when supported by the availability of renewable fuels.
The port added bunker suppliers participating in the operation ensured the vessel could load and depart with a fuel mix derived wholly from renewable sources.
The press release from the port described the operation as a first of its kind at Gothenburg. It stated, “Furetank has shown it is possible to run a tanker completely on renewable fuels, and we are proud to have welcomed the vessel here.”
Furetank has previously highlighted renewable fuel options will be an important component of its long-term strategy to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The company indicated the vessel’s operations in Gothenburg demonstrate the practical application of this approach.
