Hanwha Ocean has awarded a contract for the complete power and propulsion system on Singapore’s first FSRU, boosting LNG import capacity under long-term charter
A contract has been awarded for the complete electrical power and propulsion system of Singapore’s first floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), which is scheduled for delivery in 2027 under a long-term charter.
Hanwha Ocean, the South Korean shipbuilder, has enlisted ABB to supply a medium-voltage generator, 6.6-kV switchboards for cargo and regasification, and the motor, transformer and drive for propulsion. The scope also includes remote control and diagnostics, condition monitoring and an enhanced power protection system.
The FSRU will be delivered to owner Mitsui OSK Lines and chartered by Singapore LNG Corporation Pte Ltd (Singapore LNG).
With a capacity of 200,000-m³ of LNG, it will be moored at Jurong Port and connected to the city-state’s gas network in 2030.
Singapore LNG has contracted to process 5M tonnes of LNG per annum at the floating facility, increasing import capacity by 50% compared with the existing landside terminal.
ABB Marine & Ports Marine Systems, global business line manager division, Rune Braastad said, “We are proud to continue our long-lasting collaboration with Hanwha Ocean by supplying an integrated electrical system for Singapore’s first FSRU.”
Wood Mackenzie notes that Asia Pacific accounted for two-thirds of global LNG demand in 2024 and expects activity to remain high as stakeholders balance energy security with economic realities.
Hanwha Ocean has delivered 23% of the global gas fleet and recently completed its 200th LNG carrier.
