An Italian tugboat owner is expanding its fleet through new vessels set to be built in Egypt’s tug factory
Italy-headquartered Fratelli Neri has signed a contract with the Egyptian shipyard Misr Tugboats Factory for the construction of two tugs with 90 tonnes of bollard pull for delivery in Q1 2026.
These azimuth stern drive (ASD) vessels are being built to Robert Allan Ltd’s Rastar 3200-W design at the shipyard run by Egypt Yachts, which is jointly owned by the Suez Canal Authority and South Red Sea Shipyard.
Neri Group chairman Piero Neri signed the tugboat newbuilding contract alongside Egypt Yachts chief executive Mostafa El-Dougishy in Ismailia, Egypt in the presence of Suez Canal Authority chairman and managing director Admiral Ossama Rabiee, deputy chairman Admiral Ashraf Atwa and Egypt Yachts deputy chairman Hassan Kamal.
“This contract marks the beginning of a long-term partnership with the Suez Canal Authority,” said Mr Neri. “We look forward to further projects and future agreements that serve both sides.”
Neri Group provides ship towage, terminal marine services, salvage, fire-fighting and offshore support across the Mediterranean.
Mr El-Dougishy said these 32-m escort-class tugs will be built for harbour and shipping canal operations, ready to start work by March 2026.
Misr Tugboats Factory is also building a series of AZM-class tugboats for the Suez Canal Authority of which some are already completed, and 12 deepsea fishing vessels.
“This agreement represents the success of our vision to localise maritime industries and raise the made-in-Egypt label to international standards,” said Adm Rabiee.
